Door lock cylinder problem?

I’ve got a problem with my BMW E36 from 1996. On the drivers side door, when I try to lock/unlock using the key it sometimes just turns freely in the lock. After about 5-10 times of complete turns it seems to catch and unlock/lock (it takes fewer turns to lock it). The lock turns freely even with the key half-way in, however it doesn’t lock/unlock the cylinder. Any ideas for a DIY before I go and get raped at the dealership? (Can i check if any linkage is slipping without taking apart the whole door?)

Go take your punishment, you have a lock failure. No diy here. Go before you get locked out altogether.
