cheap reliable car to DIY mod?

I want to buy a cheap car to repair $1000 aus. I am looking for something to learn on as i haven’t done much DIY but have tools and lots of motivation . i was looking for a 4 cylinder to mod a bit, cold air intake, exhaust etc. I don’t know what model brand to go for . What would be a reliable car to buy.

Toyota or Honda. Although, I’m more partial to Toyota’s, I have never worked on an engine as easy as a 4-cyl Honda (a Civic, Integra). Plenty of room, easy to get to things – and certainly reliable.
