DIY ARTEX

Ive had quite a bit of practice repairing or replacing textured ceilings.

I prefer to scrape as much off as possible before doing anything else. I like to use a wide taping knife… the blade is flexible and works really well to knock off the old texture. I use a piece of pvc pipe as an extension handle, heheh…makes it much easier on the shoulders.

Don’t forget to cover EVERYTHING with plastic, it makes cleanup much quicker. A spray bottle of water will also help loosen up stubborn areas. Naturally, you want to wear appropriate safety gear, like glasses, dust mask, etc. Ive had need of a good respirator often enough that I purchased one that uses charcoal filters for fumes (like when I’m painting or using solvents), and/or paper filters for dust. The advantage to a ‘respirator’ as opposed to a ‘dustmask’ is that the respirator works better. Yes, its heavier, but it makes a better seal against your face, and that’s important.

Using the wide taping knife (at least 8 inches), and the long pipe (8 to 10 ft, whatever length you can purchase it in), it doesnt take as long as you might think it would to scrape down a ceiling… and it makes the next step go so much faster. I bought 2 inch diameter pipe myself, so the pipe was large enough to go around the handle of the taping knife… and I drilled thru both, and slipped a bolt and nut to secure them.

Have Fun
