DIY BIKE REPAIRS

My bike consistently gets a flat tire, although I’ve had the tube replaced, etc. many times. Any suggestions?
It is an old Huffy and otherwise works just fine. Each time I had it fixed, the bike shop declared that it shouldn’t happen again. There are no obvious punctures, holes, crap in the tired, etc. The tire just simply goes flat the first time I ride it after it is repaired. I got sick of it and didn’t bother with fixing it for awhile when I lived in the suburbs, but now that I am back in the city and it is summer, I’m wishing I had my bike in rideable condition. I think it could be something on the rim sticking out, but I would think the bike shop people (two different shops) could have seen that. Any suggestions? DIY preferred. (I’m sick of spending money and the problem not being taken care of…I took the bike back and they told me nothing was wrong with it. Argh.)
Thanks everyone for you input so far, very helpful!
I’m betting there is something embedded in the tire. Before taking the tire off, mark a spot on the tire near the valve. Once you have the tube out, put a little air in. Now, place a section of the tube in a bucket of water and squeeze. If you don’t see air bubbles, place a new section of tube under water. Keep doing this until you find the air leak. Mark the hole or keep a finger on it and hold the tube to the tire with the valve at the spot you marked on the tire. The point where the hole in the tube meets the tire will be the general area that is causing the flat. Look at the tire inside and out. Flex the tire along this area, looking closely as you go. Kind of turn the tire inside out at this area. There must be something there; a small piece of glass, a piece of wire or pin, a thorn. If you can’t find the cause, you’ll need to replace the tire. But, before you do, check the inside of the rim for anything sharp.
