DIY ENGINE REPAIR

Rover 400 Head gasket blown?
My Rover 416 recently had oil and coolant mixture sludge pouring out of the radiator header tank and over heating indication on the dash board. Is it the head gasket blown? In the engine bay I see trace of oil leak thro the cam gasket and another line of oil leak just below the cam gasket, but i can’t see any leak in the middle of the engine. (does it mean the cylinder gasket is still good?) Is it a big job to replace all the gaskets including the cylinder gasket for a general DIY person ? Is there a cheap way of getting it fixed since I can’t afford hundereds of pounds of repair ? Thanks for your advice.
Have you checked the oil dip stick to see if you can see traces of water (or coolant) in the oil? In any case from the description you gave, it certainly seems that might be a blown head gasket. Did it recently overheat?
Changing the head gasket, especially in newer cars is indeed a big undertaking. Aside from changing the gasket, you’ll have to make sure the heads aren’t warped (or worse, cracked), then have them machined, and also flush the engine to remove any coolant/water that might be inside. All in all, it’s a rather large job.
Good luck, last car I had with a blown head gasket was a $1400 repair.
