DIY HAIR DYE COLOR
Dying dark, reddish hair to light brown, then red again?

I’m considering dying it a lighter brown, and then dying red over the top, with DIY hair dye kits. Would this work?
If not, I’ll just dye it red again, or even black. Or blacky red.

This is going to be tricky. Looks like you have dark/medium red hair. To get it lighter so it can look lighter brown, you will need to bleach it first. If you try to make your dark red hair lighter by using common box dye you get at the store, it is going to turn only slightly lighter dark red and very orange. You will need to strip the red out with bleach, which will also lighten your hair. However, covering up red with any other color is always a pain – when you bleach red hair, it can go blotchy and uneven all over the place (and look orange and muddy). When you dye over the bleached hair you will need to use an ash brown color to neutralize the red, and it will most likely not turn out the color you want it to. If you really want this done, go to a salon so its done right and you don’t look like a clown.
Warning : If you dye your hair black, it will be permanent. Nothing lifts black dye out of your hair, except bleach. It sounds like you’re like me, dying diff colors all the time. Please believe me, make sure you want to commit to black hair for a while.. it will be expensive to fix and damaging to your hair to try to make it a different color later once you have gone black. The guideline for black hair is “would i be ok to have this color until all my hair grows out?” If you really want black in your hair, I would go for just some spots of it, not all over. GL to you!
