Hot to block the noise?
I know this may be far from a DIY job but I can usually do anything around the house. I know I can cure my problem but it will be expensive so I’m wondering if there is a way that’s cheaper, so anyway…
I bought a house last year with just my girlfriend and I. Brand new, never lived in 4000 sq’. My girl and I split for a little bit so I didn’t want to be in a big house alone, I got a few roommates. Now my question.
Sitting in my room. I can hear someone talking anywhere in the entire house. If my buddies have their girlfriends over, you can hear them. If they’re in the garage, I can hear them. Funny thing is, is I go to the garage and when I’m there it seems quiet but man, when I’m in my room I can just hear muffled noises and it’s driving me and them nuts.
It is a 2 story house but I have lived in 2 story before and never had this kind of problem. This standard or is there a fix I can pull off without breaking the bank?

A couple more causes. Your garage is insulated between your living space and the garage all the way around. Also how much space is there under your doors? I agree that the duct work could be passing the sound throughout the house. If most of the duct work for these bedrooms are in the attic, you could run deducated lines to these rooms at a reasonable cost and effort. An easy fix could be to run a fan or other device that would drown out the noise and after a while, you would get use to the noise of it because it would be a steady noise compared to the varied talking of your roommates. If it becomes so bad that you have to spend alot of money and want a fix that is not going to be unsightly to the interior of your home, you can remove the drywall from one side of the wall and put 1 inch styrofoam boards (4×8 sheets) and then replace the drywall and you will not only eliminate the noise problem but also make your home more energy efficient. 1 inch of styrofoam is equlivent to an r-30 rating of insulation.
