How much GPH for my aquarium do I need?

I have a 46 gallon fish tank bow front. I was thinking about making our own fish tank filter with a pump and a DIY filter. We have koi fishes and man do they get the fish tank dirty really fast. i was thinking of making a large filter to help with the tank’s dirty water problem. How much GPH do i need? Will too fast of GPH annoy the fish? i don’t want it too low for fear of murky water and bacteria.

Koi are better suited for ponds and will outgrow tanks much larger than 46 gallons. Really the only time they should be in an aquarium is if they are brought inside over the winter…

For a filter you will want atleast 500 GPH if not more for that tank with Koi in it.
