DIY LAYING TILE FLOOR
Laying new Peel-n-Stick tile over old Peel-n-stick tile?

My husband and I are wanting to install new peel-n-stick tile in our bathrooms. Unfortunately, the old peel-n-stick tile can’t be removed because it was glued in place when it was installed. Can we just install the new tile over the old? Are there preparations we need to make to the old floor? Resources such as websites would be a great help, although I already searched DIY.com… Thanks!

I agree with William about using new 1/4″ plywood underlayment if you can’t remove the tiles with putty knives and a heat gun or if the old tiles have asbestos content, so long as you have a wooden sub-floor to nail the plywood to. Some people used to use hardboard/ Masonite right on top of the tile, but that will cause you immediate grief if it became wet, unlike plywood.

But if your existing tile is over concrete slab, I would recommend heat and floor scrapers to remove the old tiles because of the great difficulty
securing the plywood unless you use subfloor panel adhesive and nails from a powder-actuated nail gun to tack it prior to placing the new tiles.
The scraper method also avoids the finish detail issues you typically run into from the raised floor level like needing to remove baseboards, trim the bottoms of doors, cut around toilets, cabinets, and pedestal lavaratories, etc., which may rise to make applying new underlayment more involved a process than it may originally appear.

You will note they do not recommend a wood subfloor over concrete either.
