What is the clear gel/glaze used in jewelry making?

I saw a show (over a year ago) on the DIY network called Creative Juice…they made this jewelry charm that I would like to make but I don’t know what they used. They had a small charm that resembled a tray. They placed a picture inside of it and then added a clear glaze looking gel on top of the picture. When the gel dried it looked like glass, therefore creating a framed protected picture ready to attach to a bracelet and wear.

They probably used a clear “epoxy resin” inside the cell (metal frame/pendant tray/etc), but other clear glossy substances can be used in really shallow and small cells like that too. (Epoxy resins come in two botttles and are mixed very thoroughly one to one, poured or otherwise applied, then left to cure for at least 24 hrs.) Even a 2-part epoxy glue could be used for small things like this (see link below).

Note that you don’t want to use a *polyester* resin inside open cells like these would be….they’re primarily used for casting in molds, to be removed.

Also be sure and notice on that page that if the color/ink of your image isn’t waterproof, you’ll have to seal it before using with resin.
