DIY – How do you replace the silicon sealant on the surround of a shower tray?
Am looking to replace the sealant as it is no longer water tight,
I have the new sealant in pump gun, but hows the best way to go about taking off the old sealant, just scrape it out, or loosen it with something or agitate it with a hair dryer,
any tips welcome, thanks.
Scraping is probably best. You may be able to pull it out. Big hardware stores do sell a remover compound, but that’s a last resort. Make sure your scraper is softer than the base or you’ll scratch it.
Clean the surfaces well and finish off with methylated spirit or rubbing alcohol. (check on a small section to make sure there’s not damage from these solvents)
Cut your nozzle to the right size opening. Push the bead, don’t pull it. Try to use a single fluid motion.
Once you have it all down, use a spritzer to spray soapy water over it before you smooth it or wipe off any excess. It stops the silicon sticking where you don’t want.
