DIY ROOF DECKING

DIY…Std shingled roof leak repair? Leak reoccurs dead center each rafter about 4 -5 times? What to do??
The wet spots are on the decking in the center of each rafter in the attic. The roof on the outside looks like new, no nails popping up or bulges or anything. I need a quik fix so I can finish the room to get the house on the market but I don’t want to leave a problem either. If I push the nails in from the inside, find them on the outside and tar under the shingle where I find them shouldn’t that stop the leak? I hope to stop the water, let it dry out and apply a sealer on the inside to protect the decking on the inside. Any thoughts, ideas or advise would be appreciated. I am having to do this myself, the pitch is steep and the roof line starts at least 14′ – 15′ up.
Pushing up nails from the inside and tarring them on the outside wont do anything. The leak cannot in any way be fixed from the inside. It must be looked at from the outside, a good roofer should be able to walk your steep roof, if not then scaffolding must be used as fail safe fall protection. The leak wont occur in an area where its just a wide open section of just shingles if they are put on properly. A full investigation including being on the roof must take place. The areas to look for first are penetrations near and especially above the leak area. Pipes chimneys and vents are all such areas that need to be looked at. Also look for areas where roof meets wall (flashing) occurs there. If an area is not properly flashed a leak will occur. If all else fails you might have faulty shingles…when I ran into this problem before all i did was remove the shingles from the leak area….and the shingles surrounding the area approximately 10′ by 10′ and put ice and water shield down to the decking. Re-shingling after wards. There aren’t too many other reasons why a new roof would leak besides the ones I have listed. Remember to look for roof penetrations near the leak area that is probably where your breach is. Most roof leaks occur in areas where water runs to, as opposed to areas where water runs from. Being that you have a steep roof I am guessing its in an area water runs to.
