any ideas on an alternative to an event tent?

My in laws have offered us their big flat back yard for our wedding. We like this idea, until I started looking into tent rentals. I didn’t realize renting a tent would run us thousands of dollars which is our whole budget! We cant not use some kind of covering because we live in a place where the weather can change a lot. We have looked into a normal event venue, the rental of the space is cheaper, but there are always things that come up that don’t work like, we have to use their caterer, we have to be gone and cleaned up by 12 am etc… We have a really small budget so do you have any ideas on a “diy tent”? Any other ideas on a backyard wedding? or diy food?

I’d say buy the tent; you’ll save money in the long run because you could use it for other events too. And since it sounds like you want a very family based affair, why not do home cooking favorites? See if your parents or your in laws would like to help chip in and cook, as with grandparents and other relatives. It would make them feel like they’re helping out more and they might just be more than willing to help out.
