Do It Yourself Plans DIY–Create The Items You Need

DIY can be a really great source of pleasure. Using your personal skills you make the things you need while saving a lot of money. Quite often the savings are large and in addition DIY may be the only possible means of getting what you want. You can make almost anything from DIY plans which are found on the web now. The price of these plans ranges from absolutely free to fairly expensive. Frequently a site which features free plans will also offer paid plans or alternatively the website may rely on ads for a source of payment. Most free plans will not be of recent publication or of top quality. There are however some exceptions to this. A  Yahoo or Google search for your item will check this out for you.

DIY plans may be located in publications such as woodworking, crafts and mechanical magazines to point out just a few. Recent magazines contain plans which are modern in design and up to date. Of course it is not at all likely that you will find any particular plan you are seeking. You will have to search back issues of the magazines to locate the plan you are after. Availability of the older publications will be a problem here. A good source for old magazines is likely to be your public library since many of them keep bound volumes of widely read magazines. You may be fortunate enough to find bound copies of publications from the nineteen fifties or even earlier dates. These magazines are a good source for older plans.

Magazines published earlier than 1964 are very nearly all copyright expired and their contents are in the public domain at the present time.  Material which is in the public domain can be reprinted freely by anybody and used for any purpose whatsoever with no restriction. Before 1964 US copyrights were for only a 28 year period. The copyright must be renewed during the 28th year or it was terminated and the publication entered into the public domain.  Renewal of the copyright was not possible after the 28 year period. As a result public domain material cannot be copyrighted either by it’s author,  the publisher or anyone else. Periodicals usually published this kind of material only once so they did not renew the copyright when it expired. The publication then entered the public domain. Magazines published before 1964 are almost all in the public domain so the content can be used by anyone in any way they like.

Some such magazines include Science and Mechanics, Mechanix Illustrated, Popular Science and Popular Mechanics  to name a few.  This is the reason why plans from these older magazines are to be found on the web either free or for sale. The greatest problem for anyone searching for a certain plan is to find a copy of the old magazine which contains a suitable plan.  This may be difficult to do and it is usually much simpler to buy a copy of the plan,  for a few dollars,  rather than spend much time looking for a free copy.
