DIY ZINES
In the lingo of today’s DIY/indie culture, what is the significance of using asterisks in place of “fi”?

I live close to Portland, Oregon, which as many of you may know has a reputation for its liberal, artsy, alternative-culture vibe. And only in Portland and in the literature (zines, magazines, brochures) of its bookstores- especially Powell’s- I’ve noticed that people replace “fi” or “fe” with an asterisk. For example, *minist *lm theory rather than Feminist Film theory. *nders keepers. Gone *shing. Etc.
I’m embarrassed to openly ask people about this and reveal that I’m not hip to the current jive; none of my friends know anything about it either. I suspect it might be somehow related to feminism, but in what way? And why?

Wow I’ve never heard of this.
But maybe it’s something to do with the “his” in history being “his” and “fi” being “hers.” Does that make sense? I think that’s pretty clever. . .
