“DIY Divorce” in the UK. Have elderly friends who married 18 months ago mainly for future security reasons.

This couple, both in thier seventies are of modest independant means and with famillies. They have lived together for the past ten years in the gentleman’s home and he has met all the major household and general holiday costs but they equally share the food costs. Less than 2 years ago they married, particularly to ensure the lady would be secure in her home in the event of her husband passing away suddenly. In fact the husband changed the house title to make it shared ownership – with her promise to eventually leave her share to his children in due course. Nothing in writing- but no reason to doubt her promise. The lady has now decided she would prefer to live on her own because she no longer likes the ‘house’ or looking after husband. He is quite fit for his age very capable and was well able to look after himself – and still is following the untimely death of his wife to cancer in 1991.
