are transformers necessary for spotlights?
i am intending to fit recessed halogen spotlights in my kitchen ceiling. most diy manuals refer to transformers etc. however i have noticed that most diy stores carry ‘transformer free’ packs of spotties…
should i avoid these? is a transformer necessary? and what is the difference?

The other two answers are correct. You can use either type of recessed can light. The only thing you need to consider is how many lights you plan on running off of one main line and whether or not the cans will be near insulation. Generally speaking, transformer free can lights are not “IC” (insulated ceiling) rated. Transformers essentially reduce and equalize the voltage at each of the lights, while also providing protection against thermal breakdown. Personally, If I were installing more than two lights – I would buy the lights with the transformers.
