DIY rainwater catchment, filter and storage during WINTER months?

Hi, I would like to know any ideas on how to store rainwater for extended amounts of time – say…6 months? I would like to be able to store rain water for house hold use during the winter. Maybe i could keep the tank indoors during the winter months in an insulated shed or something similar. How can i keep the water -once stored from going bad? how large a tank would i need? Or, is this even possible at all? I would like to be able to shower and wash clothing with this water but NOT drink it. Has anyone else tried this? I live in Pennsylvania.
