UPVC WINDOWS DIY
Instructions to fit upvc windows?

I have basic DIY skills and am used to working with wood.

Piece of cake. Have done this myself.
Get the supplying company to measure the windows – then if there is a problem it will be their fault!

Get a stock of various length ‘Fischer’ Bolts.
Drill through the UPVC Frame to suit size of bolt. They may have steel reinforcing so be prepared…and don’t drill through any ‘opening’ elements! You need to ‘open’ the windows first!
One bolt hole about every 2 to 3 feet should suffice. You only need to do the sides.

Mount the window in the frame from the OUTSIDE of the house. (It may already have the cill on it. If not, you may need to attach these!) You may need help depending upon the handleability of the frame and you will DEFINITELY need help with upstairs windows, where falling off the top of a ladder holding a window frame will not be funny.
Set Level with slim ‘packers’ and flush with outer wall (or however deep you want the window!) and then mark through the bolt holes with a graph pencil. This will show you where you need to drill the masonry.

Remove frame and drill the masonry.

Clean all debris out of hole and put frame back into hole. Use the packers again if you need to. Make sure still level.

Screw in the Fisher Bolts (they have little arms that come out of the sides as you tighten them up which makes them extremely difficult to pull out). Do opposite sides to match and work your way down the window. The bolts are not to be tightened so much that you pull the frame out of shape, but enough so that you can put the glass into the windows. You should only have a small gap around the window, and this needs to be filled in with rock mousse or similar and silicon to waterproof it.

Then you need to finish off (plaster, trims, beading, glass, rendering, painting etc if needed)

Once you have done a little one you will want to move straight on to a bay window! Principles are all the same!

Good luck. These instructions are extremely basic, but the job is an easy one. One house full and you could easily be a window fitter!
