Wind Power connection to grid?
I built a small windmill from a DC PM motor, and have batteries and an inverter. I produce about 700 watts,110 AC consistantly.
Answer these not withstanding the ‘talk to the eletric company’ and ‘danger to linemen for backfeed’
1) What would happen if I took a SO cord with male terminals on both ends and plugged one end into the inverter and one into a house wall scoket?
2) In the above senerio would excess power (assume 700 watts exceeds demand at night) backfeed to the grid?
3) What is a good DIY method of connecting this inverter to the grid?
1) Sizzlesizzle – that’s not the way to do it. Depending on the phase relationship, which will be essentially random, you have no way of predicting which direction the energy will flow. The way to do it is to supply the utility line with a current proportional to the instantaneous utility voltage. Repeat, it is a current-regulated application, not voltage.
We build regenerative active loads here at PosiCharge, up to 900kW, that either sink or source DC. When sinking, they put a regulated current into each of the 3 phase 240V lines. We also build vehicle battery chargers up to 120V, 500A, and use these loads to test chargers. They work nicely, the charger drawing say 30A/phase, the load recovering about 25, both are on the same circuit breaker in my lab, current clamp indicates only 5A draw from the grid.
If you’re interested in expanding your setup above maybe 10-30kW, you might consider our MT-30, a 30kW version. Get clearance from the utility, unhook the inverter,and feed it DC.
